IDENTIFY THE HOUSE FLY
- WHERE?
- Around rubbish, animal waste and damp organic material.
- WHEN?
- Problems can persist where food and breeding sites remain.
- WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
- Manage waste and use insect screens to reduce entry.
- WHICH SOLUTION?
- Skin, room or surface treatments, depending on the need.
WHY DOES IT MATTER FOR HEALTH?
House Flies can mechanically carry microorganisms between waste, surfaces and food. This does not mean every fly transmits disease. Covering food, removing waste and cleaning contact surfaces supports hygiene. Killing visible flies alone does not remove contamination or breeding sources.
House Flies are drawn to food smells, organic waste and animal waste. Open doors and windows allow entry. Warm conditions and suitable breeding material can increase numbers; managing sources is a separate task from treating visible flies.
Flies seek feeding sources, so exposed food and preparation areas can attract them. Cover food, clean spills and keep rubbish covered. Remove food and containers from the area before treatment.
Why do rubbish and organic waste matter?
Immature stages develop in suitable organic material and produce new adults. Remove waste regularly, clean bins and reduce entry points together. Targeting adults alone may leave the source in place.
Is protection on the skin the same as control in a room?
No. Skin-applied insect repellents provide personal protection; room insecticide aerosols target flying pests, while surface products are applied only where the label permits. Do not use a product in another setting. Check the specific pest and application area rather than a general reference to flies.
